Participants in the annual legal program meeting of the Center for Public Resources (CPR) included lawyers from corporations and the Federal government, two former judges, and members of the academic community. Seminars focused on the changing role of the judiciary in ADR, the use of mediation and negotiation in corporate disputes, the management of discovery costs, and use of ADR by the government. Other sessions considered unilateral strategies to reduce the costs of litigation, cost reduction in large actions involving many parties, the Harvard Negotiation Project, and alternatives in employment disputes. Further sessions pertained to the use of ADR in contract disputes with the government and the use of litigation committees. Recommended actions for CPR were the provision of services in discovery management and resolving discovery disputes, preparation of a shelf brief addressing the need to protect confidentiality in ADR procedures, and securing companies' acceptance of a pledge to try ADR processes before a dispute arises.
