In 1982, 1.6 percent of the total theft incidents in the State were farm-related, accounting for 6.3 percent of the total value lost. One farm in 55 reported losses due to theft in 1982, compared to 1 in 46 in 1981. Farm-related thefts decreased between 1979 and 1982. Young males were usually involved in these thefts. The theft of farm machinery caused the most substantial theft loss to farmers and farm implement dealers, although losses dropped almost 30 percent. The theft of most farm-related items occurred during the winter. Different production areas experienced different types of losses. Loss rates were higher along the State's borders for certain commodities; fewer farm-related thefts were reported in areas adjacent to the interstate system.
