The data are stored as a hierarchically structured data base with varying record lengths and with each record stored sequentially in the data file. Six types of records are included. The defendant header record contains information about each defendant, including sex, race, year of birth, and State of birth. The case record contains most of the information about each case and its progress through the court. The charge record contains information about each charge against a defendant and the processing of that charge. Three additional records cover sentencing, continuances, and victims and witnesses. Descriptions of the variables and the codebook format are included.
