The structure and activities of Ohio's Statistical Analysis Center are described and compared with those of other centers in the United States.
Abstract
Established in 1977 to provide better statistical information and research for Ohio, the Statistical Center is in the State Department of Development and is staffed by a research administrator, three researchers, and a secretary. Funding comes from both State and Federal sources. The center concentrates on producing long-range research studies of crime issues and the workings of the criminal justice system as well as responding to research requests from information users both in and outside Ohio. From June 1980 through June 1983, the center produced 27 publications. Since 1978 the center has responded to over 1,000 research requests; the current rate is 400 per year. Ohio's center has a larger staff than most and has one of the few advisory boards specifically created to assist in addressing research needs. Descriptions of the publications produced by the center, figures, and a table showing types of research areas are included, as is a list of probable future directions for the center.
