This book contains the basic information necessary to inaugurate a pilot program to aid Wisconsin school districts in developing community teams to work with schools in establishing policies and procedures for the identification, referral, and prevention of child abuse/neglect.
Abstract
A rationale for school involvement in the program focuses on three general functions that schools can assume: to identify abused and neglected children, to develop preventive programs in conjunction with community resources, and to support local child protective service programs. Wisconsin law is cited to support the involvement of educators in child abuse and neglect detection, and sections of relevant laws, including the Child Abuse and Neglect Act, are included. The importance of school personnel establishing a policy for effectively handling suspected abuse and neglect cases at school is noted, and it is advised that school personnel should know the child abuse and neglect statutes, facts about the problem in the school's community, and the way in which cases are currently handled. Further, the importance of articulating the what, when, where, why, and how of the policymaking team is emphasized, and the development of a Parents Anonymous (PA) chapter in the community is suggested. Sample agendas for workshops designed to train educators are presented, and people and agency resources in Wisconsin and across the Nation are identified. A bibliography of 37 films and filmstrips as well as 43 books, films, and articles is included. Policies of various Wisconsin school districts are also provided.
