This pocket-size book of 1984 correctional statistics contains data on adult correctional systems in the United States and Canada, probation and juvenile correction systems in the United States, and private sector involvement in corrections.
Abstract
The section devoted to U.S. adult correctional systems includes an inmate population profile and data on institutions, budgets, and programs as well as on administration and staff. Data on the U.S. probation system cover number on probation, number placed on probation in 1983, successfully completed probation supervision, probation employees, officer ratio to probationers, probationers removed from supervision, probation costs, and number of probation officers and their salaries. The section on private sector involvement in corrections presents data and information on the jurisdictions involved, the number of adult and juvenile agencies that use private sector services, descriptions of the most innovative services, the services contracted most often, privately operated institutions, private sector costs, and future contracting. A population profile and data on facilities, administration, and staff are reported in the section on juvenile correctional systems in the United States. Canadian Federal correctional system data include statistics on inmate populations, institutions, budget, conditions of confinement, special programs, and administration and staff. Provincial and territorial correctional systems data are also provided.
