The Governor's Office of Criminal Justice Planning in California developed this youth crime prevention program to teach children in grades kindergarten through 4 how to reduce their vulnerability to certain crimes and the importance of responsible behavior and good citizenship. The first three steps to program implementation are meetings to (1) review program content and discuss the need for the program and potential benefits, (2) identify the role of school district and law enforcement personnel in presenting the program, and (3) consider procedures to enhance student and staff safety and building and equipment security. A sample agenda is provided for the fourth step -- an orientation session for programs involving multiple schools. Step five, a session to inform parents, is to be followed by a teacher training session. As a final step, the guide recommends the formation of a youth crime prevention committee during the program's initial phase to assist in program implementation and interagency cooperation. Appendixes contain a school survey to aid in identifying campus problems and existing crime prevention programs, a school security checklist, school crime statistics, program goals and overview, and a sample parent letter describing the program.
