This standard, developed by the Law Enforcement Standards Laboratory of the National Bureau of Standards as part of the Technology Assessment Program of the National Institute of Justice, establishes minimum performance requirements and test methods for the ballistic resistance of police body armor.
Abstract
The standard revises NILECJ-STD-0101.01, dated December 1978. The revision adds performance requirements for level III-A, a requirement to test fabric armor for shots impacting the armor at an incident angle of 30 degrees, and a test method that simulates a multishot assault. Also, the test round velocity for level IV armor has been changed, and the allowable time to test the wet-conditioned armor has been increased. The scope of the standard is limited to ballistic resistance only; threats from knives and other sharply pointed instruments are not addressed. Police body armors covered by this standard are classified into six types by level of performance, and the test ammunitions specified are common threats to police officers. Testing requirements specify acceptance criteria for the body armor to be tested, the test sequence, and the performance level that constitutes failure. General test procedures are described, as well as the test procedures for each type of body armor and the wet-conditioned armor. A table summarizes the test procedure for each type of armor.
