Twelve articles and an annotated bibliography focus on a variety of theoretical and practical perspectives of conflict resolution mechanisms.
Abstract
Four theoretical papers provide an overview of social conflict theories and their implications for conflict resolution practice, a model of the stages and appropriate sequencing of peacemaking efforts, a discussion of intervention ethics, and a model of the relationships among theoretical perspectives of conflict resolution. Variables which influence the effectiveness of mediation are identified, and the nature of their impacts are discussed. Three papers focus on mechanisms for resolving conflicts. Included are expositions of arbitration, peace marshalling, and the training of mediators. Additional articles focus on the new areas of community dispute settlement, the management of environmental conflicts, and alternative dispute settlement. Another paper describes the institutionalization and professionalization of the conflict resolution field. An annotated bibliography lists 50 sources, primarily case studies and exercises. Chapter reference notes are also supplied.
