Abstract
Statistics on child sexual abuse, incest, and rape emphasize that teens should be aware of potentially dangerous situations to avoid becoming a victim. The booklet defines the kinds of sexual abuse that can happen to teenagers and laws which protect children. A profile of the sex abuser notes that he usually is average looking, clean-cut, and frequently known by the victim. The booklet also examines when and where assaults occur and debunks the myth that the way a female dresses and acts causes a sexual assault. Suggested precautions to avoid an assault cover situations such as dating, walking and driving, being at home, and babysitting. Protective strategies to respond to an attack consider making noise, running, stalling, talking calmly, and fighting. The discussion of incest talks about victims' The discussion of incest talks about victims' feelings; their fear of telling, and the importance of telling someone to stop the incest, of getting help for the abuser, and of preventing long-term emotional problems. The booklet describes how teens can help friends who have been victims of sexual abuse and cautions against overlooking male victims. Community resources and references are listed, along with local services for sexually abused children and sexual abuse treatment programs in Texas.
