This report provides a general overview of Massachusetts recidivism data for the period 1971 through 1982, presents data on trends for which a control for program selection biases has been performed, and reviews the data patterns discerned in terms of extended followup periods.
Abstract
Analysis reveals the occurrence of a systematic reduction in the recidivism rates from 1971 through 1978; the 1979 and 1980 releasee populations represent the first statistically significant increase in recidivism rates in a 9-year period. Results of recidivism studies indicate that individuals who had experienced a furlough prior to release from prison had significantly lower rates of recidivism than individuals who had not. Finally, individuals released from medium- or minium-security institutions had significantly lower rates of recidivism than did those released from maximum-security institutions. Fourteen tables illustrate the data. Included are 28 references.
