This manual presents the variables, coding information, and descriptive statistics from the data set presenting population figures and arrest frequencies for selected crimes in seven cities between 1970 and 1980, with emphasis on arrest rates by age cohorts.
Abstract
The cities are Atlanta; Chicago; Denver; Knoxville, Tenn.; San Jose, Calif.; Spokane, Wash.; and Tuscon, Ariz. The data came from 1970 and 1980 censuses and the Uniform Crime Reports for 1970-80. One of the two files for each city contains arrest data for males and females of all ages; the other file contains population data by sex and age. The population data files have 247 variables, and the arrest files contain 1,470 variables. Arrest data cover murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, other assaults, arson, forgery, fraud, and embezzlement. Arrest data are also provided for stolen property, vandalism, weapons offenses, prostitution, other sex offenses, opium abuse, marijuana abuse, gambling, family offense, drunk driving, liquor law violations, drunkenness, disorderly conduct, vagrancy, and all other offenses combined. The files have logical record lengths of 80 characters.
