Application of available statistical methods to highly fluctuating longitudinal data such as caseloads can give form to what appear formless. In this study, data were fitted to a straight line to identify the general direction of the caseload trend.
Abstract
The techniques of moving averages and exploratory smoothing clarify the true trend. Seasonal adjustment reduced the range of variation but did not give form to the series. Remaining variation suggests the need to analyze long time periods. (Publisher abstract)
