This book examines law enforcement in the United Kingdom (U.K.) from past to present, primarily focusing on the police systems of England and Wales, but including information on other police systems in the U.K. and on British policing overseas.
Abstract
The autor discusses Britain's influence on policing throughout the world and compares the British system to that of Europe and the United States. Also described are relations between government and police in the U.K. and < the development of the police in the context of the Industrial Revolution, the declining Empire, the world wars, and the political protests of the 1960's. The efforts of reformers, including Thomas de Veil, Henry Fielding, John Fielding, Patrick Colquhuon, and Robert Peel, are presented, and the author discusses the way in which British police reflect the society they serve. A figure, map, footnotes, an index, and 123 references are supplied.
