Hearings before the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Justice were held to take testimony on alleged media violence as it may affect children.
Abstract
The opening statement of Arlen Spector, U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania calls attention to the problem of television violence and its effects on child development. His statement is based on 1982 National Mental Health Institute study documenting a connection between media violence and aggression in children. Testimonies of such witnesses as an early childhood education teacher, 'Captain Kangaroo', (the television personality), media representatives, and psychologists are included. The potentially harmful effects on children of viewing televised violence was the main topic considered. Possible solutions discussed were establishing a family viewing period and encouraging television executives and advertisers to reduce television violence. Additional papers are appended. Tables and references are included.
