This illustrated monograph presents 13 recently constructed correctional facilities that embody both advanced design concepts and contemporary correctional philosophy.
Abstract
The facilities are of three types: decentralized secure adult institutions, urban detention facilities, and high-rise metropolitan correctional centers. Most of the facilities have received citations for merit from an annual exhibition sponsored by the American Institute of Architects and the American Correctional Association. An introduction describes the principles on which correctional design is now based. These include an institutional atmosphere that is as normal as possible, humane and safe confinement and environment for both inmates and staff, direct interaction between staff and inmates, and a balance between security features and an environment projecting a spirit of openness and communication. The five secure adult institutions are all decentralized, campus-like institutions capable of offering a variety of inmate programs and services. The urban detention facilities show how sites of varying sizes can be used. The high-rise buildings show how small, self-contained populations can be organized in vertical planes. For each design, photographs and a narrative description explain main design features and give technical information on costs, site and building areas, capacities, the architect, contractor, and construction dates.
