Data for 1983 from 45 U.S. State correctional systems (including Guam) indicate the number of escapes, the number captured, deaths/injuries to inmates or staff resulting from escapes, deaths/injuries to private citizens perpetrated by escapees, and new policies to reduce escapes.
Abstract
Of over 7,000 escapes from State prisons reported for 1983, over 80 percent of the escapees were returned to institutions. Three States reported injuries to one or more staff as a result of escape, but no staff deaths were reported. Five States recorded escapee deaths, and a number of escapee injuries were reported. Escapees injured or killed private citizens in three States. Improved inmate classification was the most frequently mentioned revised policy or procedure implemented to reduce escapes. A chart presents all of the information for each state as well as aggregate data for the Correctional Service of Canada. States not reporting were Arizona, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, and Ohio. The relevant questions from the questionnaire are provided.
