Senator Charles Percy outlines some Illinois government efforts to address alcohol and drug abuse among juveniles. A student who had abused alcohol from the age of 6 and subsequently became involved in drug abuse relates the consequences of such abuse on his school work and his life in general. Students involved in organized drug abuse prevention efforts describe their work. The testifying students estimate that alcohol and drugs are used by 55-90 percent of the students in their schools. The Illinois Lieutenant Governor describes some of the prevention programs funded and coordinated by the State. Representatives from seven drug abuse prevention programs describe the nature and effectiveness of their work. The prevention programs described encompass drug education for parents, students, and medical professionals and early intervention by school personnel.
