Abstract
Procedures are surveyed for behavioral, psychotherapeutic, socioeducational, and biomedical intervention with sex offenders (including juveniles, mentally retarded offenders, incestuous fathers, pedophiles, and violent rapists). Administrative issues are also discussed. Program managers describe the establishment of treatment centers for outpatient and incarcerated offenders. State-level program evaluators discuss recidivsm studies, while academic researchers address the technical aspects of evaluating treatment procedures and outcomes. A detailed protocol is provided for evaluating criminal insanity and competency to stand trial; relevant case law and statutory issues in treatment planning are covered. An examination of ethical issues in mandatory treatment considers the patient's rights versus society's rights. Issues regarding the impact of sexual assault on the victim and the victim's family are also explored. The concluding section discusses operation of a behavioral laboratory to evaluate and treat sexual deviance as well as the current state of technology in the laboratory assessment of sexual arousal patterns. The appendix contains a State-by-State listing of sex offender treatment programs in the United States and similar programs in Canada. Chapter references and a subject index are provided.
