Recent efforts to establish time standards for juveniles suggest that delay is now perceived as a problem in juvenile courts.
Abstract
This article discusses why time is important to juveniles and introduces four ways of conceptualizing it: court time, case time, defendant time, and intervention time. The second part of the article describes a study of case processing time in one juvenile court, exploring the factors associated with long case processing times and the stages in the process in which cases take longest. The article concludes with a discussion of the implications of the different kinds of time for juveniles and some suggestions for research on delay in juvenile courts. (Publisher abstract)
