The tables document a continuing downward trend in California's crime rate, down 3.3 percent from 1983. Burglary, which accounted for over half of the California Crime Index, showed the largest decrease. Two offenses, willful homicide and aggravated assault, registered slight increases, but total violent crime fell by 1.2 percent. Arrests remained stable, except for drug arrests which increased. Of the adult felony arrest dispositions reported, convictions accounted for 57.2 percent. Adults under correctional supervision increased 12.4 percent. Within the juvenile system, new referrals to probation departments decreased slightly, and the numbers on caseload status increased. Juveniles in county probation detention facilities increased 9.4 percent. Total criminal justice agency actual expenditures increased by 9.8 percent, while inflation-adjusted expenditures increased 3.3 percent.
