In this three-part filmstrip series, Timothy Mouse explains the places, situations, and enticements involved when children encounter dangerous strangers.
Abstract
The filmstrip series is designed to help teachers initiate a relevant classroom discussion about safe conduct when dealing with strangers. A plan for a 10-day miniunit that emphasizes student interaction, repetition of information, and spaced review is included. The plan involves the use of three filmstrips and corollary tape cassettes -- On the Alert, Shortcut to Trouble, and Sizing up Strangers. The filmstrip series aims to meet several specific objectives associated with making students more aware of the need to exercise caution when dealing with strangers. Students are able to practice the use of correct safety measures and are given an opportunity for positive behavior role playing that can substantially reduce personal risk to the child. Students are also taught to reject the stereotype that depicts potential child molesters as looking evil and criminal. Additionally, the series seeks to reinforce positive attitudes in children toward parents, teachers, and the police as concerned, protective adults.
