This report presents nationwide and State-by-State statistics on delinquency and dependency-and-neglect cases processed in 1981 by juvenile courts.
Abstract
After discussing the characteristics and limitations of juvenile court statistics, the report presents a narrative summary of study findings. For both delinquency and dependency-and-neglect cases, the summary covers overall rates and trends, offender sex, type of area (urban, semiurban, or rural), and method of handling ('petitioned' or 'nonpetitioned'). The unit of count is the case, selected because it is the best indication of how frequently the juvenile court is used. A discussion of study methodology covers data collection, sample selection, and the estimation procedure. Tabular and graphic data are presented in the body of the report, and the appendix provides data on cases disposed by reporting counties for calendar year 1981.
