Annotation
Based on the discussions and writings of 10 children with incarcerated parents, this manual provides insight into the crisis of parental imprisonment from the child's perspective and help for other children facing the same crisis.
Abstract
Each of the 10 children who worked on the manual discuss themselves, their experience of parental separation and reactions to it, and their special problems. Additional sections, using quotes from these children, examine initial reactions to parental imprisonment, including anger, self-blame, and sadness; the importance of discussing feelings and problems with others (friends, relatives, or professionals); reactions to visiting an imprisoned parent; the value of writing to the parent in order to keep in touch, gain information, and express feelings; and special problems associated with holidays. A resource guide lists California self-help groups for children of inmates, other agencies offering services for children, books about children coping with parental imprisonment, and materials for imprisoned parents. An open letter to the caretakers of such children emphasizes the important role of families in the child's life. Photographs are included.
