Cocaine and marijuana smuggling into the United States has been increasing even though domestic law enforcement efforts have been steadily increased.
Abstract
One alternative being stressed in the battle with smugglers is the use of diplomatic initiatives to reinforce foreign anti-narcotic police activities, interdiction and eradication of the marijuana and coca plants in the source countries. These initiatives have in the recent past caused smugglers to react with bombings and other threats in order to slow diplomatic efforts against them. The source countries face other internal threats that eat up their resources which would otherwise be used to combat narcotic growers and smugglers and in many instances the growth and use of narcotics has existed long before the U.S. demand for the drugs grew to its present state.
