Chapter 2 discusses the special experiences of the black woman in a society that is both sexist and racist, as well as the importance of discussing domestic violence and other problems in the black community. The next chapter outlines the effects of wife abuse on children and the potential risks to them, and the negative messages they receive in a violent household. Subsequent chapters detail how police, medical professionals, attorneys, shelter, family and friends, counselors, support groups, and the church can help the abused woman put an end to violence in her life. Included is information on police procedures and reports, obtaining protection orders, benefits of using the legal system, choosing an attrney, the benefits of prosecution, and courtroom procedures. The final chapter reiterates and emphasizes the importance of the individual as her own best resource.
