After briefly reviewing the rationale for and the definition of library security, the article advises that a library security survey should focus on five elements; the library as an institution, the site, the building, the collection, and the people (staff and patrons). Institutional security encompasses insurance, rules and regulations, the designation of authority to act in emergencies, emergency procedures, and people security. Also covered are the use of guards, manual alarm systems, and maintaining the confidentiality of library patron records. Guidelines for collection security pertain to cataloging and circulation procedures, measures for protecting rare or unique materials, and procedures for apprehending thieves. Building security considers doors and windows, fire detection and suppression equipment, data-processing center security, and intrusion detection devices. Site security emphasizes lighting. Brief attention is given to security considerations for different types of libraries, planning for the handicapped, and staff identification badges. A table of contents for a security procedures manual is provided.
