The manual is intended to be supplemented with a textbook, lectures, or both. An introduction defines criminalistics and outlines the measurements and instruments used in crime laboratories and the basic tests performed. FBI guidelines for preserving and transmitting a variety of types of evidence to a crime laboratory are also given. Additional chapters explain the analysis of finger, palm, and sole prints; the study of blood and body fluids; the identification of human hair; and the analysis of toxic substances. Further chapters focus on firearms and explosives, toolmarks and metals, casts and molds, fiber identification, glass and soil identification, paint identification, and document examination. Photographs, drawings, charts, and suggested readings for each chapter are included. Appendixes present addresses of chemical suppliers, problems, and worksheets.
