This 1984 report of Canada's Committee on Sexual Offences Against Children and Youths considers the prevalence of sexual offenses against juveniles, including the extent and nature of juvenile prostitution and child pornography.
Abstract
A national survey obtained information from victims and their families on the extent and nature of sexual offenses against children. Data were also gathered from public service agencies dealing with child sexual abuse cases. The report covers rates of occurrence in the population and characteristics for the crime types: sexual assaults, acts of exposure, exposure followed by assault, and offenses involving victim deaths. A review of relevant Canadian law addresses the child's legal status, the definitions of sexual offenses, rules of evidence, and the law regarding publication of victims' names. Relevant police and child protection services are discussed, as are victim health services. An overview of laws pertaining to juvenile prostitution and child pornography is followed by analyses of characteristics of these offenses. Recommendations pertain to prevention education, law reform, evidence principles, protection services, information systems, and research. Relevant legislation is appended. Tabular data and chapter references.
