This symposium presents an overview, critique, workshop summaries, and a panel discussion summary from a symposium on the report of Canada's Committee on Sexual Offenses Against Children and Youths in Canada (Badgley Report).
Abstract
An overview of the Badgley report addresses the committee's focus on (1) the extent of child sexual abuse and recommendations for victim protection, (2) the prevention of juvenile prostitution, and (3) the prevalence of child pornography production and pornography's availability to children. A critique of the report faults its neglect of the need to reform cultural traditions that foster aggressive male sexual behavior and the objectification of women and children as male possessions and instruments for meeting their needs. Summaries of eight workshops pertain to sexual abuse prevention, victim treatment, the clinical assessment of alleged victims, medicolegal interventions, offender profiles, work with parents and children, law reform, and research issues. A summary statement of symposium issues discusses research, victim and offender treatment, and law reform.
