Long-term corrections problems that frame corrections' contemporary experience are described, including an analysis of current theory and evidence on punishment methods, an overview of correctional organizational and legal structures, and a portrait of the correctional client. An examination of the current state of the major correctional components encompasses jails and other short-term facilities, probation and related incarcerative punishments, and incarceration programs and management. Also considered are the procedure for releasing inmates, the community corrections movement, and offender adjustment under community supervision. Issues that have emerged relatively recently in corrections also are addressed: prisoners' rights, corrections for women, and corrections for juveniles.
