This booklet explains the educator's role and functions in addressing and preventing child abuse.
Abstract
After defining child abuse and explaining its causes and effects, the booklet instructs educators in recognizing and reporting child abuse, as well as in helping missing children. A description of the educator's role in child abuse investigation and intervention covers the provision of relevant information about the child and family and the delivery of supportive services to the family. Suggested school prevention programs include courses in parent education, child development, human growth and development, family living, and safety principles and development, family living, and safety principles for children. Schools can prevent their own abusive treatment of children by carefully selecting staff, creating a nonabusive classroom environment, and prohibiting corporal punishment. Additional suggestions are delineated. The appendix contains a chart showing who is mandated to report child abuse in each State and a directory of resource organizations. 13-item bibliography.
