He notes that efforts in Thailand exemplify the effectiveness of cooperation among governments in dealing with these problems. Working with the U.S. Government, Thailand has completed more than 37,000 drug-related arrests in 1985, seized tons of heroin and opium, launched extensive opium and marijuana eradication campaigns, and adopted new legal and law enforcement measures. Through diplomatic initiatives, bilateral and multilateral assistance, participation in international organizations, and improved communications, the United States is working with governments throughout the world. In addition to these efforts, the Administration has emphasized domestic interagency coordination and cooperation, as well as tough drug-law enforcement policies. Moreover, new ways are being found to educate young people about drugs. Through the combined approach of strong enforcement and effective education, major progress can be made against drug trafficking and abuse.
