Testimony, prepared statements, and supplemental materials examine the dynamics, effects, and control of sexual exploitation of children and adolescents in child pornography, sex rings, and prostitution.
Abstract
Psychological characteristics, motivations, and methods of seduction used by pedophiles are described. Links among various kinds of child sexual exploitation are discussed, including the importance of child pornography collections to the child molester. The processes through which children and youth become involved in prostitution and other forms of sexual molestation are illustrated by both domestic and international examples: the sale or indenturing of young children, kidnapping, and prostitution as a means of economic survival for runaway and throwaway children. Also considered is the frequent association between drug abuse and child prostitution. The emotionally devastating effects of sexual exploitation on the child victim are documented, and treatment programs are described. The high incidence of histories of childhood sexual abuse among adult sexual offenders and the difficulties involved in treating such offenders are discussed. Also noted are the need for increased investigation, prosecution, and sanctioning of sexual exploitation are barriers to law enforcement in this area. Additional materials examine child exploitation abroad, the role of organized crime in child pornography, and children's rights. A program for street youth in Seattle, Wash., also is described.
