The selected areas are bail, sentencing, forfeiture, group criminality (conspiracy and racketeering), electronic surveillance, witness immunity and protection, grand juries, currency transaction reporting, State revenue files access, and intergovernmental cooperation. Data on the content and administration of State laws in these areas were obtained through a survey administered by coordinators in each State to State officials most knowledgeable about the content and implementation of pertinent State laws. Completed instruments were received from 44 States and territories from September 1984 through June 1985. Project staff monitored pending legislation up to June 1985. Survey findings indicate that drug trafficking control generally has high priority in the States. However, formulation and application of laws have been influenced by a broad range of considerations and conditions that vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. The report also provides an overview of the impact of relevant Federal law on the development of State laws.
