The typology of child molesters and pedophiles described in this monograph is designed to help law enforcement officers understand and recognize the behavior of molesters before their arrest or identification.
Abstract
After distinguishing between child molesters and pedophiles, the book divides molesters into the categories of situational and preferential, and summarizes the basic characteristics, motivation, victim criteria, method of operation, and pornography collection of each. Exceptions to this typology are discussed, such as sex rings, incest cases, and adolescent offenders. Behavior patterns that identify preferential child molesters or pedophiles are outlined. Because a pedophile almost always collects child pornography or erotica, the book examines the types likely to be collected, use of the collection, and its characteristics. Criteria used to evaluate whether photographs are pornographic or erotic are detailed. The book also discusses typical reactions of a molester when he is identified and problems frequently encountered in investigating child sexual abuse. Charts and approximately 20 references.
