Criminological literature, including national crime statistics and large-scale victim surveys, forms the basis of a review of the nature, incidence, and victim and offender characteristics associated with 10 major categories of violent crimes.
Abstract
The analysis considers threats, assault, robbery, homicide, assassination, mass murder, serial murder, bombing, and airline hijacking. Within each category, typologies of offenses and offenders are provided, with emphasis on the psychological factors of use in psychiatric assessments of offenders. Seasonal patterns, locations, relationships between victims and offenders, types of weapons used, victims' ages and living situations, and results of criminal justice processing are summarized for each type of crime. 69 references.
