Government officials, educators, legislators, and individuals active in public education campaigns regarding drug abuse testified on the impact of drug abuse on young people in black communities, programs for dropouts, and other prevention strategies.
Abstract
The Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics Matters surveyed Government efforts to curtail international drug trafficking, while a representative from the Drug Enforcement Administration outlined a its five-part national strategy that includes a cooperative program with coaches. A Department of Education official discussed that agency's role in alcohol and drug abuse education, focusing on the need to build local communities' capacities to work with abuse problems. A former governor of Kentucky reviewed that State's substance abuse problems and described a statewide truancy project. The drug abuse and school dropout problem was addressed by an educator from the New York City school system and a representative from the National Education Association. A member of the Advertising Council, Inc., talked about public service advertising campaigns to educate young people about drug and alcohol abuse. Other witnesses discussed the National Basketball Association's efforts in drug abuse prevention and the National Institute on Drug Abuse's initiatives. Witnesses' prepared statements are provided.
