Extensive discussion during the Interregional Preparatory Meeting for the Seventh United Nations Congress, to be held in 1985, considered criminality and crime prevention in the context of socioeconomic development and change.
Abstract
Remarks emphasized the national and international dimensions of the crime problem and the contribution of unbalanced or unplanned development to increased criminality. It was noted that efforts to deal with the problem of crime must take into account the diversity of political, economic, and social systems and cultural values and traditions. In addition, legal systems must be responsive to national needs and changing requirements. It was recommended that governments accord high priority to the integration of crime prevention and criminal justice in national development planning. Other priorities include research into the interrelationship between criminality and specific aspects of development, major efforts to combat terrorism and drug trafficking, and information exchange and dissemination. Additional recommendations covered the role of the United Nations in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. Lists of participants and documents are appended.
