In 1980, the Pompidou Group became a part of the Council of Europe and Council member nations were able to choose to become members of the Group. Since 1980, the Group's membership has grown to 16 member countries. Every two or three years, representatives of the member countries meet to review the work of the Group and to plan future activities. Government officials then meet to arrange meetings, seminars, working groups, and symposia. The Pompidou Group has considered many topics of general interest, including European cooperation in the control of drug traffic, problems related to the staffing of treatment and rehabilitation services, the care of hardcore addicts, problems connected with drug addicts in prisons, the development of monitoring systems to assess public health and social problems related to drug misuse, and drug trafficking on the high seas. The Group also has examined the role of the criminal justice system in responding to the needs of drug addicts, methods of reaching young people at risk, problems of women and drugs, drug control services at major European airports, cannabis misuse in Europe, AIDS among drug abusers, and consideration of elements for inclusion in a new United Nations convention against illicit drug and psychotropic substances traffic. 1 annex.
