This report assesses population changes in the Massachusetts State prison system and summarizes all movement of offenders in Department of Corrections (DOC) custody during 1984.
Abstract
Included are new court commitments, paroles, returns on parole violation, discharges, escapes, deaths, transfers to other correctional facilities within the State and outside, and temporary releases to hospitals and courts. This report consists of 16 tables that describe various types of movement. Each is broken down by specific admitting or releasing institution or institutional group. Results indicate that during 1984 there were 12,917 admissions of all types and 12,513 releases; between 1983 and 1984, overall State prison population increased 9 percent; new court commitments were up 10 percent; returns on parole violation were up 39 percent; and movement offenders between DOC and county houses rose in 1984.
