This volume presents seven reviews of criminal justice research and policy, particularly those related to crime control.
Abstract
International similarities and variations in the community policing movement are discussed. The formation, organization, leadership and effectiveness of community crime prevention programs such as Neighborhood Watch are reviewed. Situation, crime-prevention strategies are discussed within the context of the significant decline in suicide rates following the removal of carbon monoxide from public gas supplies. Also examined is accomplice offending in juvenile and adult criminal careers, its relationship to the etiology of crime, and implications for intervention. A review of the drunk driving literature examines law reform, enforcement, sanction, treatment, and public education initiatives and their efficacy. Factors influencing prison overcrowding are discussed, and three approaches to managing the problem are described: diversion, sentencing reform, and construction. Finally, judicial and prosecutorial discretion are considered with reference to such sentencing reforms as sentencing guidelines, determinate sentences, and decisionmaking guidelines in plea negotiations.
