Growing Healthy, developed over a 13-year period, integrates substance prevention studies with standard student health education classes for grades K-7. Cognitive and affective tests were administered to intact classrooms comprising experimental and control groups in two northeastern suburban school districts. A summary report on students who completed Growing Healthy in 7th grade was tabulated from their 9th grade attitudes and behaviors. Results indicate that (1) a reduced percentage of students used alcohol on a regular basis, (2) students expressed stronger beliefs that they would not drink alcohol as adults, (3) a reduced percentage of them had tried drugs, (4) they expressed stronger beliefs that they would not use drugs as adults, and (5) a reduced percentage smoked tobacco products on a regular basis. 4 references.
