This volume is a comprehensive drug prevention and intervention guide for parents with children ages 8 to 20.
Abstract
This step-by-step blueprint tells parents in 'no-nonsense language' how to open up conversations with their drug susceptible children and impart information about drugs without closing down communication. Prevention information includes what to say to preschool children about drugs; when and how to start an anti-drug education; and how to assess a child's psychological health. Typical causes of substance abuse and what counteractive measures parents can take are discussed, as is how parents can create a home environment in which children will be less apt to indulge in drugs. Intervention topics include a drug-by-drug breakdown of controlled substances, including what each looks like, what to look for in a child that indicates use, and immediate and long-term effects. Sample scripts designed to promote communication, and physical and behavioral warning signs of abuse are provided, and what to do in a drug emergency is described. The book includes a complete listing of recommended drug-abuse treatment programs and hot lines with addresses and phone numbers. Treatment techniques for confronting drug- or alcohol-abuse; tips for raising the issue and when not to; suggestions for how to get children of legal age into treatment; and what to expect when treatment is completed are discussed. A comprehensive listing of health insurance coverage as it relates to drug treatment programs is provided. 57 references.
