The Safe Policy Program trains policy-level teams of community leaders to join forces and coordinate efforts to improve school safety and eliminate illicit drug use among juveniles. The program emphasizes adoption of zero-tolerance policies by schools and police, information sharing, and parental involvement. A special curriculum for juvenile and family court judges provides training about substance-impaired driving offenses by juveniles. The project also assists community organizations in assessing the scope of the juvenile alcohol/drug problem and programming to combat it. A Boys Club of America project involves high-risk youth in drug prevention activities through outreach and positive peer models. Another project provides training on juvenile gang drug activities and violence and worked with communities to develop systemwide strategies for dealing with gang-related problems. A law-related education curriculum is being developed that focuses on drug law and the consequences of illicit drug use. Finally, the National School Safety Center is coordinating a program to help urban schools deal with drugs, gangs, weapons, and violence on their campuses.
