Abstract
FLORIDA TRAINING SCHOOLS ARE 'OPEN DOOR' INSTITUTIONS BASED ON AN ENVIRONMENT INCORPORATING REALITY THERAPY INTO ITS STRUCTURE. THE SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM IS PARTIALLY ATTRIBUTED TO THIS TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY, BASED ON THE CONCEPTS OF SELF WORTH, AND THE NEED TO LOVE AND BE LOVED. ANOTHER MAJOR FACTOR IS THE MOVEMENT AWAY FROM RURALLY LOCATED TRAINING SCHOOLS. MEASURES OF SUCCESS ARE INDICATED BY REDUCED LENGTH OF STAY, IMPROVED CHILD-STAFF RATIOS, REDUCED TRUANCY RATES, IMPROVED EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT, AND ULTIMATELY, REDUCED RECIDIVISM RATES. THE ONLY SIDE EFFECT HAS BEEN INCREASED INSTITUTIONAL COSTS.
