The causes, phases, and treatment of domestic violence are reviewed; and factors contributing to the maintenance of the abusive relationship are discussed. California laws defining offenses and sanctions are presented, including those related to assault, assault with deadly weapon or force, rape, corporal injury, weapons possession, unlawful detention, and violations of court orders and custody or visitation decrees. Victims of domestic violence are advised to ensure that they are safe from further abuse, seek medical attention, and preserve all evidence of the abuse and injuries. Victims also should consider calling the police, moving out, insisting that the partner move, or insisting that the abuser seek counseling. Additional guidelines cover seeking police intervention, citizen arrest, the police report, deciding to prosecute, and trial and sentencing, including dispositional alternatives. Considerations in seeking shelter from the abuser are addressed, and a list of things the victim should take when leaving is provided. Finally, financial options for victims, including victim compensation, and community resources are identified.
