This consumer product list specifies manufacturers and products complying with National Institute of Justice Standard 0101.03 for police body armor.
Abstract
Information is provided on two general categories of body armor: that suitable for routine full-time wear, including Types I, II-A, and II; and that suitable for terrorist threat or tactical use when weight and bulk are less a factor, including Types III-A, III, and IV. Manufacturers whose products are in compliance with the standard include American Body Armor, A&B Industries, Blauer, Point Blank, Progressive Apparel Corporation, Protective Apparel Corporation, Safaviland, and Second Chance. The listed products met workmanship and labeling requirements of the standard, as well as penetration and deformation requirements when tested in both wet and dry conditions. The fundamental considerations in selecting body armor are the level of threat to which police officers are exposed and the nature of their own service weapons. Each agency should ensure that all officers know and understand the protection body armor affords, as well as its limitations. 2 tables.
