This project seeks to involve 50 Boys Club/Boys and Girls Club units of the Boys Club of America in a targeted outreach program of delinquency prevention, focusing on gang prevention and intervention.
Abstract
A four-stage development process will be used including identification and assessment of program approaches, prototype development based on existing approaches, development of training and technical assistance materials, and testing of the prototypes. Five clubs will be selected as test sites. Each site will develop an intervention program model to address the specific needs of its location and constituency. Ultimately, it is expected that 1,750 youth at risk of being attracted to youth gang and/or displaying delinquent behavior patterns will be served through this initiative. To recruit these at-risk youth, 200 formal linkages with referral agencies will be created. In addition, 20 training events will be conducted for 200 professional staff. Other project activities will include preparation and distribution of a program statement of the Boys Club/Boys and Girls Club role in gang prevention, a national symposium, and an inservice training manual.
