This article describes tests used to determine whether inmates suffer brain dysfunction as well as modes of treatment within a corrections setting for those with neuropsychological deficits.
Abstract
Learning disabilities and violence are examples of neuropsychological impairment. Intake evaluations of prisoners should include some type of neuropsychological screening. Several screening tests for neuropsychological deficits are described. Because neuropsychological deficits influence cognitive abilities, they influence forensic determinations such as ability to stand trial, criminal responsibility, and dangerousness. Treatment of some neurological impairments can enable prisoners to better assess their vocational strengths and weaknesses as well as their behavior, thus improving rehabilitation and reducing recidivism. 37 footnotes.
